Register as a New Patient

Important: Notice

Please note that given the rapid increase in our list size over 2020/21 we are currently only accepting new patients to the local area who do not have a local GP.

Check you are within the practice's catchment area:

Each GP practice has a defined area within which they will accept new patients.

  • You are welcome to register if you live within the purple area on the map, are new to the area, and are without a local GP
  • If you live just outside the purple area, then you may register but only if you meet the out of area requirements

If you like to complete a paper form

Using the online registration process is the easiest way to register and makes the process more efficient for the surgery.

If you, or someone you are helping to register, is unable to use the online method then you can complete a paper form.

The form is linked below. Note that this is a link to a form in PDF format.

The form can also be obtained from our Reception.

When the form is completed please remember to sign it and either post it to the surgery address or deliver it yourself.

Please make sure that all the personal details are filled in clearly - including the details of your previous GP surgery  - as this makes it much easier to identify you on the national system

If you are staying away from home and need medical support

Important: NHS 111

NHS 111 can direct you to the best place if you think you need medical help right now – you can call 111 or use NHS 111 online.

If you are staying temporarily away from your normal UK address or if you are a visitor from outside the UK you can register temporarily with this surgery.

This is to help you if you need medical help with a new or existing condition that cannot wait until you return home.

You will need to be staying at an address that is inside the area marked blue on the map on this page.

This applies to people who are temporarily at an address inside our boundary for between 24 hours and 3 months.

You will need to call the surgery to register as a temporary resident.

Support from your usual GP

Remember that you can often get support over the telephone from your usual GP surgery. If you live in England and you are staying temporarily in another part of England, your usual GP can send prescriptions electronically to a pharmacist in this area.

Important: New Patient Registrations

Westway Medical Centre is currently only taking on new patients without a GP in the area. This is agreed with Cheshire & Merseyside ICB (health authority). See below for a statement from the health authority:

Sefton Place are aware of the high demand and pressures of services in GP practices locally, and of the pressures more generally reported nationally. It is important to acknowledge that circumstances can rapidly change within practices, and it is essential that practices can provide a safe level of care for all patients.

Over the past 5 years Westway’s patient list has risen substantially, whilst other practices in the area are not increasing at the same pace, indicating that Westway is experiencing a very high volume of new patients. Westway has recently suffered unforeseen pressures including a surge in registrations and currently have capacity issues due to restraints with their building. They have recently raised safety concerns with Sefton Place with regards to increases in their list size and clinical safety, and enquired about the process for a formal application to close their list

Practices can operate a ‘temporary list closure’ if clinical safety to the current patients could potentially be affected by the registration of further patients. Should the Practice continue to feel compromised following temporary measures, they will be encouraged to make a formal application to close their list.

The Primary Care Team at Sefton Place are currently working with neighbouring practices, including Westway and others in the area to support with safety and capacity restraints that many are currently experiencing due to the influx of new build houses within the area.

As clinical safety and capacity issues ease, Westway will be able to resume an open list to include patients who are already registered with a local practice. At present it is agreed they are functioning a 'managed list' process prioritising patients to the area without a GP.

We understand that on occasion patients who already have a GP practice may have a reason why they can no longer continue to be registered at that practice and will seek registration elsewhere. Any patient who finds it difficult to register with a practice can come to the ICB directly where we would allocate them to a practice within the area. Patients are given the opportunity to provide 3 practices where they would prefer to be registered, however, the allocation process is done on a rotational basis so that the workload is spread thus keeping a more stable health care system. Allocation to a practice will only be considered where the patients address falls inside the practice boundary.
