Empowering Children's Super Bodies to Combat Common Illnesses

This winter, the NHS Cheshire and Merseyside’s ‘Super Bodies’ campaign is here to support parents and caregivers in managing common childhood illnesses like coughs, sore throats, and earaches. Many of these are viral and do not require antibiotics, as children's immune systems are often strong enough to recover on their own.

Quick Tips for Common Illnesses:

  • Coughs: Ensure rest, hydration, and soothing remedies like warm drinks (avoid honey for children under 1). See a GP if the cough lasts more than 3 weeks.
  • Earaches: Use age-appropriate pain relievers and apply a warm or cold cloth to the ear. Contact a GP if symptoms persist beyond 3 days.
  • Sore Throats: Provide fluids, rest, and cold treats like ice lollies. Visit your GP if the sore throat lasts over a week.

Parents can also use the Alder Hey Symptom Checker or download the Healthier Together app for advice tailored to their child’s symptoms.

By recognizing when care can be managed at home, we can reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and keep these treatments effective for serious illnesses. Always trust your instincts and consult a GP if you're concerned about your child.
