SGLT-2 inhibitor drugs are prescribed to improve the treatment of diabetes, chronic kidney disease or heart failure. The name of these drugs ends with ‘gliflozin’. These drugs are proven to reduce mortality in the majority of patients. Recent research has highlighted a very rare but important side effect called Fourniers Gangrene. This occurs in only 1:100,000 patients but it can be dangerous if not treated early. Symptoms include swelling, tenderness, redness to the genital area. You may feel unwell or have a temperature. If this occurs, please seek urgent medical attention.
